Even if hard partying and pharmaceuticals aren’t your cup of tea, it’s impossible to deny how intriguing rock n’ roll couples are. Romanticized ever since the inception of “sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll”, there’s something fascinating about two individuals living that lifestyle and combating all the opstacles that come with fame and fortune. As well as adoring the muscians they date, I have a particular fascination with the women who capture the hearts of these brilliant artists. Whether their significant other is musician, groupie, or band-aid (Penny Lane, oh how I love thee), they share a certain lust for life and rock n’ roll. From one of the world’s greatest love triangles to the two lovers who allegedly broke up The Beatles, here are some of my favorite couples that rocked………

“You’re just a memory of a love that used to be”

Rolling with The Stones for all of the late 60′s, Italian actress and model Anita Pallenberg seemed to the apple of each of the band member’s eye. She began dating guitarist Brian Jones in 1965 after they met while see was on a modeling gig. A tumultuous relationship from the very start, by 1967 she had her sights set for another Stones guitarist, Keith Richards. On holiday in Morocco the two got together and Pallenberg was with Richards from then on. The couple would go on to have three children, the first being their son Marlon in 1969. Together till 1980, Pallenberg and Richards spent many pinnacle years together, particularly at the Villa Nellcôte, in the South of France in the Spring and Summer of 1971 where the Stones wrote and recorded the majority of “Exile on Mainstreet”.

Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash

Because your mine, I walk the line

These two country crooners shared a romance that has already gone down in history, despite prior marriages on both ends. Amidst the beginning of their musically-infused romance in 1967, Johnny and June won a Grammy award together Best Country & Western Performance, Duet, Trio Or Group (vocal or instrumental) category for the song “Jackson”. A year later in 1968, Johnny Cash proposed to Carter during a live performance at London Arena in London, Ontario and they married on March 1, 1968. In years to come they would continue to make award-winning country music but perhaps their greatest composition of all was their son John Carter Cash. The offspring of Johnny and June Carter Cash, not so surprisingly ended up with a successful career as a songwriter and producer. After 35 beautiful years of marriage to Johnny, June experienced complications during a heart surgery and passed away in Nashville, Tennessee on May 15, 2003. At Carter’s funeral, her stepdaughter, Rosanne Cash stated that “if being a wife were a corporation, June would have been a CEO. It was her most treasured role.” Johnny passed away less than four months later on September 12, 2003, perhaps, to finally reunite with his beloved songstress in heaven!

Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed

Satellite of love

Although it wasn’t until 2008 that they finally got hitched, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson shared decades of love for music and performance, as well as each other. Laurie, an experimental performance rock artist, was a prominent figure on the New York City music scene in the 70′s, as was Lou who had just quit The Velvet Underground and embarked on a solo career. While both experienced similar musical successes, it wasn’t until the late 90′s that the two artists got together. Laurie contributed to “Call on Me” from Lou’s collaborative project The Raven, on the tracks “Rouge” and “Rock Minuet” from Ecstasy, and “Hang on to Your Emotions” from Rthe Twilight Reeling; Lou Reed contributes to the tracks “In Our Sleep” from Laurie’s Bright Red and “One Beautiful Evening” from Life on a String. Eventually, they decided to marry and had a private ceremony in Boulder, Colorado.

Marianne Faithfull and Mick Jagger

Please, Sister Morphine, turn my nightmares into dreams

In the late 60′s, when The Rolling Stones broke onto the Swinging London scene with their blues covers and rebellious attitude, Frontman Mick Jagger and young folk musician Marianne Faithfull crossed paths. The beginning of what would become a very tumultuous relationship. While most remember their relationship as being full of wild and reckless times, Faithfull served as inspiration for a lot of Jagger’s finest work. After Faithfull introduced Jagger to “The Master and Margarita” By Mikhail Bulgakov, the book served as the inspiration behind one of The Stone’s most acclaimed hit, “Sympathy For the Devil” of Beggar’s Banquet. It’s also rumored that the songs “Wild Horses” and ” You Can’t Always Get What You Want” off of Sticky Fingers were about Faithfull. She and Jagger split up in May of 1970.

George Harrison & Pattie Boyd

“Something in the way she moves, attracts me like no other lover”

Having read Pattie Boy’s autobiography many times over, I am completely intrigued by the rock n’ roll love triangle for which she was the object of desire. It all began with The Beatle’s George Harrison who fell for 20-year old Boyd on the set of the film ” A Hard Day’s Night” in 1964. Upon their first meeting Harrison said ” Will you marry me? Boyd laughed, so Harrison said ” Well, if you won’t marry me, will you have dinner with me tonight?” Boyd eventually obliged and the two fell madly in love. They married in 1966 and had a tumultuous relationship which ended in 1974. Boyd inspired The Beatles classic ” Something” and eventually Eric Claptions hit “Layla”. Despite being close friends with Harrison, Clapton was head over heels for Boyd and pursued her for years prior to the end of her marriage. (read more below)

Layla, darling won’t you ease my worried mind

In the late 60′s, Eric Clapton and George Harrison began writing and recording music together and became close friends. However, that couldn’t help Clapton from falling in love with Harrison’s wife, Pattie Boyd. After Boyd dismissed his affections, Clapton pursued her younger sister Paula. However, Paula left him as soon as she heard the lyrics to “Layla” in which Clapton professed the state of his love for Boyd. After years of love letters back and fourth, and the demise of Boyd and Harrison’s marriage, the two lovers finally got together. They married in 1979, and Boyd experienced similar pains to her previous marriage with Harrison. However, on the good days, Boyd inspired Clapton to write the classic love ballad “Wonderful Tonight.”

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

Love is living, living love, Love is needing to be loved

Whether or not you believe that Yoko Ono broke up The Beatles, if you’re a romantic you simply cannot die the beautiful love that she and John Lennon shared (despite the puzzling “Lost Weekend”?). It all began in 1966, when John saw one of Yoko’s works at the Indica Gallery called “Ceiling Painting,” as follows: “The viewer is invited to climb a white ladder, where at the top a magnifying glass, attached by a chain, hangs from a frame on the ceiling. The viewer uses the reading glass to discover a block letter “instruction” beneath the framed sheet of glass – it says “Y E S.” It was through this work that Ono met her third husband and longtime collaborator, John Lennon.” Lennon, when relating this story to Dick Cavett on his talk show in 1971, explained that if the word had been “no,” he would have left the gallery and not come back, but was so moved by its positivity that he had to get to know Yoko.” From there, despite a period of separation from 73′ – 75′, the couple were together up until Lennon’s tragic death on December 8th 1980. Yoko has dedicated a large part of her life to commemorating John’s life.

Paul and Linda McCartney

I know my heart can stay with my love. It’s understood, it’s in the hands of my love

Paul first met rock n’ roll photographer Linda in 1967 at a Georgie Fame concert at the Bag O’Nails club in London when she was on an assignment to take photographs of “Swinging Sixties” musicians. Later that night the two went to the Speakeasy Club on to see Procol Harum and again four days later at the launch party for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. When her assignment was completed she flew back to New York City. In May 1968, they met again in New York, as John Lennon and  Paul were there to announce the formation of Apple Corps. In September of the same year, he phoned her and asked her to fly over to London. They were married six months later in a small ceremony. The couple had four children together (one of whom was fashion designer Stella McCartney) and even were both in Paul’s group, the Wings. Linda also introduced Paul to her Vegetarian lifestyle which eventually led to The McCartneys became outspoken animal-rights activists. Sadly in 1995, after a touch battle with breast cancer, Linda died. Paul’s last word to her were ”You’re up on your beautiful Appaloosa stallion. It’s a fine spring day. We’re riding through the woods. The bluebells are all out, and the sky is clear-blue”.

Debbie Harry and Chris Stein

Once I had a love and it was a gas, soon turned out had a heart of glass

Debbie first met Chris after moving to New York City and joining his band, The Stilettos, in 1974. After feeling both musical and personal chemistry the two eventually left the band and went on to form Blondie, which was named after the popular nickname men would bestow her. After becoming regulars at clubs like the legendary CBGB’s, Blondie found mass popularity and success. Through the 80’s Debbie and Chris’ relationship would stay strong, even when Debbie had to take a few years off and nurse Chris when he was in bad health. Despite breaking up romantically in the 90s, the two have continued to work together and make the same extraordinary music that brought them together.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham

You, you make loving fun, and I don’t have to tell you but you’re the only one

Ever since the Stevie and Lindsey met, they were both lovers and musical collaborators. In the beginning of their relationship, the coupled recorded seven demos in 1972 on an analog 4-track machine, and drove to Los Angeles to pursue a record deal. Their album, Buckingham Nicks, was released in September of 1973, and although it had very poor sales then, it is now very highly regarded by rock critics. Mick Fleetwood had heard the song ”Frozen Love” from the album and courted Lindsey as a guitarist for his band. Lindsey insisted that he and Stevie were a package deal and the couple was asked to join Fleetwood Mac on New Year’s Eve, 1974. After a great amount of commercial success, the fame and fortune started to take it’s toll on Stevie and Lindsey’s relationship. In November 1977, after a New Zealand concert for the Rumours tour, Nicks and Fleetwood, who was married, secretly began an affair.The pain the couple endured both before and after their breakup is best illustrated on the 1977 Fleetwood Mac album, Rumours. It was during the album’s tour that Stevie became involved in a short lived-romance with singer/songwriter of The Eagles, Don Henley. While Stevie and Lindsey are no longer romantically involved, they continue to work together on musical projects.

Music: it brings people together, parties to life and smiles to faces, and now it’s coming to Mulberry as part of the Mix Tape Tour!

Over the past year I’ve come to the realization that it is the British fashion brands who take their music most seriously. From the Burberry Acoustic Project to the newest venture I’ve been following, The Mulberry Mixtape Project, the Brits are honing in on young talents and giving them exposure. Mulberry seeks to bring an array of live acts who will play either full or acoustic sets at their events around the world. The lineup has boasted past acts such as Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding, Friendly Fires, Hot Chip and Sunday Girl.

“We’ve always loved having singers and bands join us for celebrations and we have a history of musical moments.” explains Mulberry.

Alexander Wang enhanced the darkness, which held steady amongst his entire F/W 2012 collection, with a fittingly-moody avant-garde soundtrack. The closing number, “Rockers to Swallow” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was without question the frontrunner, practically tailor-made for the black-cast runway.

The release of never-before-seen Rolling Stone photographs, taken on tours around America 64′-66′ , have made me feel closer to the Stones than ever. Taken by Bob Bonis, the Stones’ manager at the time, these snapshots not only document their travels throughout the states, but beautifully encompass their off-stage personas.

Stylist-turned-designer Rachel Zoe’s third collection was, in a nutshell, “If you took Mick Jagger in the ’60s and made him a woman- these things are what he’d be wearing — with a bit of Marianne Faithfull, Bianca Jagger and Jane Birkin thrown into the mix,” according to Zoe herself. Anyone familiar with Zoe’s aesthetic knows that these names are not just paragon figures of  fashion during the ’60s and ’70s, but her personal style icons as well. Her collection was chic contemporary, with a psychedelic twist —  true to the era which she paid homage to while still being wearable for today’s girl.

Zoe not only looks the part of a groupie but practically is one as her musical taste completely lies within the rock n’ roll genre. From the British invasion bands such as The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, to The Doors and modern artists such as the banjo-strumming Jim Moray who covers Fleetwood Mac’s “Big Love”, the track list was ’70s nostalgia to a tee. This is, besides the opening number by the Suuns which I didn’t think was the right choice and didn’t fit with the rest of the record selections. Call me partial, but I think The Stones’ “Emotional Rescue” would have been the perfect song to commence with. Have a listen!

Inspired by the arid and rugged Australian Outback, Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s F/W 2012 collection was an imaginative take on the land down under. “We have been looking at the history of the building of Australia—the layers and layers of it we found in Victorian photographs, all the way through to the late thirties. The Outback and aboriginal art.” explained the sisters to Vogue Magazine, backstage at the show.

The silhouettes reflected the ’30s and ’40s era with knee-length dresses nipped at the waist, high-waisted trousers, strong-shouldered menswear-inspired outerwear and skirtsuits, as well as flowing evening gowns to close the show. Many of the Mulleavy signatures stuck out in the idiosyncratic details with Peter Pan collars, cowboy buckle belts, hand print chiffon, and the star appliqué hair combs which adorned the models hair.

The show was enhanced by rock n’roll sounds, most recognizably from The Ramones and U2, whose instrumentals opened and closed the show. Despite missing out on the vocals and lyrics (case-in-point that of U2 frontman Bono), instrumental, as well as orchestral versions of popular songs have become favored runway selections. Be sure to give this track list a listen and decide for yourself if these alternative versions strike your fancy (they certainly do mine).

Upon hearing that electropop duo Holy Ghost!, comprised of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel, would be DJing an American Rag event I was attending, I jumped at the opportunity to interview them. As far as I am concerned, everything they touched turns to musical gold having remixed the likes of Moby, MGMT, and Cut Copy, and created their own tracks, which perfectly fuse the eclectic group of genres which influenced them growing up. Getting the skinny on their  music, style and travels, I’m excited to share my pre-party conversation with the duo. Be sure to listen to their new single of their new record, “It’s Not Over”, remixed by Dimitri From Paris!

LV: How does music influence your fashion and vice versa (if applicable)?

AF: These are always really tricky questions (laughs).

NM: In practical terms… I mean, I don’t play drums anymore. My fashion, when we were touring a lot, was almost entirely dictated by comfort in playing on stage. I played in canvas shoes and jeans. Beyond that, we’re pretty boring fashion wise.

AF: When you’re on tour, you don’t get to wash your clothes very much. You’re in public everyday so we usually wear uniforms, as in one good, really solid outfit. A really nice jacket, white t-shirt, something that’s disposable- like Hanes t-shirts- one good pair of jeans, that you wash never.

NM: Our dream merchandise is disposable.

(at which point they point out their dressing room stash comprised of Heineken six packs and a few sealed package with Hanes white tees and boxer briefs)

I want to make a tissue box that has just white v-neck t-shirts.

LV: Sounds like that could be a very lucrative idea. I take it, in that case, that you don’t have a stylist and you guys are your own stylists?

AF: Well, there’s my Mom, my friends……

LV: A far as music goes, you’ve made tons of great remixes of other artist’s songs, do you have a favorite remix of one of your tracks that another producer’s done?

NM: Actually, there’s one that’s about to come out. The last single on our record called, “It’s Not Over” which was remixed by Dimitri From Paris. I think that’s probably my favorite remix of one of our songs.

AF: Yeah, that and Eli Escobar’s remix of “Say My Name”.

LV: What artists influenced you most significantly growing up?

AF: Michael Jackson, Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, stuff our parents played in the house. A lot of rap music, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Biggie and then all the DFA stuff, like LCD Soundsystem.

LV: Are you guys going to South By Southwest?

AF: No, we’re going to Australia tomorrow morning. We’ll be touring there and Southeast Asia, like Japan.

LV: Anything in particular you’re looking forward to most or just the whole journey?

AF: Tokyo, Tokyo for the shopping.

LV: So, you guys have been there before?

AF: Yeah, the stores are crazy.

LV: The people, the places, it’s like another planet, right?

NM: It is. We’ve traveled a lot and Tokyo, and Moscow too, are the only two places I’ve been where I really felt like I was on a totally different planet. And the shopping…. there’s just everything. They have these specialty shops for everything – there’s shops for every niche of everything you could possibly imagine. For records, there’s like a record store just for Elvis records. You can get carried away and spend a lot of money.

LV: How long are you guys going to be there?

AF: In Japan only two days, but the whole tour is about 23 days.

LV: When you’re not on tour, what are your favorite spots in New York City? Nightlife, restaurants, parks etc.

AF: This restaurant just opened up called Jack’s Wife Freda on Lafayette and Kenmare. Also, Le Baron, a club that just opened up – and Le Bain – those are really the only two clubs.

NM: Also, here. W.I.P is good. Though I second Le Bain and Le Baron, The Frenchies got it right.

LV: Where do you guys shop?

AF: Surface to Air, which is a French shop. I also have a shoe store by my house which sells everything really cheap and without the tax. Like, $30 for Converse or $63 for Ray-Bans.

LV: To buy new?

AF: Yeah, there’s some shady sh*t going on there.

NM: I’ve learned there’s a family that owns all the sneaky stores in New York. It’s all the same crew. Also, I used to be really into sneakers and you can go there and ask them about something that came out 4 years ago and be like, “How much?” and then they’ll go look in the back into their secret stash of stuff.

LV: Are you guys into vintage or thrifting?

NM: If I see a cool looking store, I’ll go in . It’s tough in New York because everything’s so combed over. Anywhere that has something nice, you’re not really getting a deal. I used to when I was a teenager. I was obsessed. All my clothes were from like, Cheap Jacks or Army/Navy stores. I used to get all my jeans at this place called Bobby 2000 which had the best vintage Levi’s. They were all really reasonable, like $40.

LV: Has your style evolved?

NM: Embarassingly enough, I just saw an early press photo of us and I’m wearing black jeans, black cons (converse) and a black button up shirt. That was 5 years ago, so, not to much. Keep it simple. It’s hard to get too adventurous as a man.

AF: On tour it’s all black, all black t-shirts.

LV: Right on (I’m wearing all black)

AF: Black never goes out of fashion. It’s funny though, because when I’m in L.A, I can identify other New Yorkers by the all-black ensembles.

Olivier Theyskens’ F/W 2012 collection is dark sophistication for a women who has an affinity for the avant-garde but at the end of the day, needs pieces that are wearable. Of course, this women is also has a bit of a dark streak.

Dually inspired by luxury ready-to-wear of the past (think ’60s & ’70s), as well as smoldering rock n’roll edge, Theyskens’ collection was sheer, sharp, and streamlined. Casual boyish trousers, embellished t-shirts, and naturally leather jackets were eventually dressed up with metallic tweed pieces, chunky fur detail and Bouclé coats. Anyone familiar with Theyskens’ work knows his gowns always make the biggest statement, and this season was no different. Ethereal and airy gowns glided down the runway  in his signature downtown-cool fashion.

Featuring one of my favorite runway music track lists of the season, Theyskens’ boldly opted for the sexy sounds of Missy Elliot and downtown cool of M.I.A’s new track, “Bad Girls”. Closing the song with a feel-good ’70s classic, “I Can’t Stand the Rain” by Ann Peebles, it was an ironic mix that enhanced the show seamlessly. “Music [drives] the type of energy desired for the show. Its sound illustrates a position towards modernity or a will to underline any references; it adds something extra to the clothes and the attitude,” explains designer Theyskens to Vanity Fair. “Its flow can strengthen the message of the collection—if any. The right choice of the music is crucial for the magic of a good show.” Seriously, you have to give these songs a listen!

Designer Amy Smilovic’s F/W 2012 was a juxtaposition between the ’90s and ’60s decades. According to Style.com, it’s “the Narciso-wearing Gwenyth Paltrow, not the leg-baring Pucci Gwynny” meets swinging Beatles girl. With a fittingly-mod color palate featuring black, white, cobalt, and burgandy, with pops of emerald green, the collection was minimalist androgyny. Boxy wool coats, boyish pant-suits, crispy collared shirts and trouser-like maxi skirts would be the perfect addition to the women with smart, chic taste and an appreciation for tailored pieces with room to breathe.

The runway music was a clever jumble of different decades and genres, from British folk artist Donovan’s classic psychedelic ballad, “Season of the Witch” to one of the most legendary hip hop records of all time, 1987′s “Paid in Full” by Eric B & Rakim. The finale song, a new track entitled “Lay Me Down” by pop rock duo Graffiti6, was seemingly made-to-fit for the runway and brought the show back from its journey through time. Have a listen!

For Badgley Mischka F/w 2012, as well as their younger diffusion line (Mark and James), Mark Badgley and James Mischka were inspired by Fritz Lang’s 1927 expressionist film Metropolis which was set in an lustrous urban dystopia. Starring silent film actress Brigitte Helm, the film’s fashion took a futuristic approach to the art deco movement of the late ’20s,  which is how one could characterize this Badgley Mischka collection. With models donning the same voltage-infused hair and Tim burton Character-esque (as an artist backstage described it) makeup as Helm did, the runway was a sea of black, gold and everything in between. The color palate was a beautiful interpretation of the time period as exact hues could not be identified in Metropolis as it was filmed in black and white.”We colored it the way we thought it should be.”explained the designers. Glimmering gold, midnight black, emerald green, rosey copper and deep bronze shown brightly on luxurious textures comprised of jet beading, tweed, lamé and other deco materials. The silhouettes were slanky with long, lean lines perfect for accentuating a statuesque figure.

The show’s runway music provided by Javier Peral was modern mix of pop, rock n’roll and electro, opening with runway favorite Charlotte Gainsbourg’s new track, “Paradisco”, a subtle complement to the jazzy designs. The runway would soon be electrified with PlanningtoRock’s “Living It Out” remixed by When Saints Go Machine, a vibrant seraphic masterpiece which set the tone for the rest of mix. Closing with “Raw Spectacle” by Miracle Fortress, the finale was dreamlike. Have a listen!
